Rain spoils Honda's plans at Sepang, Pirelli rain tires tested

The HRC test took place with a reduced aerodynamic package and the 850cc engine, as they prepared for new 2027 regulations

MotoGP: Rain spoils Honda's plans at Sepang, Pirelli rain tires tested

The Honda test team ended its 2025 activities before the Christmas break with a three-day test in Sepang, where  Takaaki Nakagami was also present, but bad weather heavily affected their work. The incessant rain that fell on the Malaysian track prevented HRC from reaching one of its key goals: the track debut of the new 2027 engine.

According to Motorsport.com, Nakagami lapped with a "hybrid" bike that had reduced aerodynamics and an 850cc engine, which already complies with the new 2027  technical regulations. The test was useful for a first run with the prototypes brought to the track by Pirelli, destined to become the sole tire supplier for the MotoGP starting in 2027, as it replaces Michelin. The Japanese rider tried both rain and slick tires, but the few laps completed in dry conditions didn't allow for significant data to be collected.

This test was also Honda's last one in which it was able to take advantage of Rank D concessions. In fact, the results obtained at the end of the season promoted the Tokyo-based manufacturer to Rank C, with consequent restrictions: no more free tests for the test team and a stop to private testing for factory riders. Like Ducati, KTM and Aprilia, Honda will now have to wait for official Pirelli tests in 2026 or alternate development between the 2026 and 2027 prototypes in the allowed sessions.

With this in mind, the work plan has already been defined: Aleix Espargaró will focus on the evolution of the current RC213V, while Nakagami will pursue the development of the new RC214V 2027. The Spanish rider is expected to join project in mid-season.
