Yesterday we published an analysis of the best Sprint simulations on the third day of testing at the Sepang circuit. However, an even more detailed analysis was given to Crash.net by Jorge Lorenzo, who was in Malaysia as Maverick Vinales' coach. The Spaniard gave Ducati full marks, underlining how the Borgo Panigale manufacturer has taken "a strong step forward" with the GP26.
"Unfortunately, it looks like Ducati has clearly made a strong step forward," said Lorenzo. "Looking from the track, you can see the Ducati is so smooth, so electric, especially in the exit of corners with 20% of throttle. They are so smooth at maximum angle with 20% of throttle, but also when they pick up the bike. The other bikes look a little bit more nervous, while Ducati keeps this smoothness for a long time."
Lorenzo then highlighted how the long-run performance was particularly convincing, mentioning the names of the Ducati riders who stood out at Sepang:
"Alex, Marc, and Pecco did a strong Sprint simulations, so strong."
From a technical point of view, the former world champion pointed out two key areas for improvement: the rear device and aerodynamics.
"They improved the rear device at the start, but also in the exit of the corners it looks very low, super low, and this for sure helps acceleration, to not wheelie. We also saw some very big wings on the front of the bike, like a Formula 1 car almost. This downforce helps a lot to keep the bike very stable in acceleration."
While urging caution, Lorenzo acknowledged that Ducati has sent a strong signal to its rivals.
"It's also one track and it changes so much from track to track. Maybe Aprilia can be closer and KTM can be closer, but this start from Ducati is strong."
