After finishing the 2025 season in 13th place and with decent results behind him, Luca Marini is approaching the new season with great enthusiasm and optimism, although he is aware that from now on there will be no technical concessions that have allowed Honda to make significant progress in recent months.
"It's fantastic to have moved up to the C class. The goal is to end the 1000cc era on a high note and bring something positive to 2027, given that the DNA of the bike will remain the same," he said on the eve of the official tests in Sepang.
What did you do during the break?
"My winter was quite busy with a small child, but I also worked hard on the details to improve as a rider. I am convinced that we can do a great job this season."
What do you think is a realistic target?
"It's hard to say at the moment. In Valencia, we tried some things that could improve us, but it's still early days. I think we can fight for a place in the top seven, even if the goal is the podium."
How would you describe the new RC213V?
"I can't say much about the technical aspects. The bike has definitely improved, but until I'm on it, I can't say any more."
The market has exploded well in advance. Do you feel you deserve a possible confirmation with Honda?
"In 2027, everything will change, and today it's difficult to understand where it's best to be. Personally, I am in constant contact with the Japanese management, with whom I have an excellent relationship, but I think a lot of speculation is the result of winter boredom."
Did you get a chance to talk to Espargaro after the shakedown?
"Aleix is very happy and positive about the progress made. In my opinion, we need to stay focused and realistic. After the first day of testing, we'll know a little more. Everyone in the team is focused and aware that they have managed to rise from the ashes. When I arrived in 2024, the situation was critical, but now everyone is motivated and positive."
How do you see the partnership between Vinales and Lorenzo in the role of mentor?
"Very good. They are giving us some gems on social media, and I am convinced that Maverick will perform very well. As for me, when I was a kid, I had the opportunity to be mentored by Idalio Gavira. He helped me a lot when I was young. When you have a former rider behind you, it helps and can make a difference. I approve of the choice, but it is difficult to find the right person."
Going back to Espargaro, how would you rate his performance over the three days last week?
"Testing is not an easy job, but Aleix is always smiling. He set a time of 1'57", which is excellent. We'll see. As a team, we need to grow and continue with the right development. Instead of thinking about lap times this year, we need to focus on homologation."
How did the private test in Indonesia with the VR46 guys go?
"Very well. Mandalika is a beautiful place to train without the pressure of testing or competition."
What do you think of this heated rider market?
"In my opinion, it's not in anyone's interest to rush. We started talking about 2027 in October 2025. But now that's the way it is, and we have to adapt. As I said before, rumors have been flying around lately, but I think it's mostly out of boredom. I think the first few races will be crucial."
What if a soccer-style approach were adopted, with specific timelines?
"It could be interesting, but it's up to others to decide."
