MotoGP: Petrol goodbye: in MotoGP from 2027 100% non-fossil fuels

Fossil fuels goodbye, at least for MotoGP and starting in 2027. In fact, the Grand Prix Commission has determined that in two years, 100% non-fossil fuels must be used in the premier class. Currently, the percentage is 40 percent.

To check that this rule will be met, an evaluation will be done with the C14 system. The system measures the fraction of C14, which is the carbon isotope with the shortest lifespan, missing in fossil substances due to its decomposition over a long time, out of the total carbon, and compares it with the standard levels found in the atmosphere. For MotoGP fuels from 2027, we will have the same figures minus a tolerance, so the C14 content of the fuel sample must be the same as that of the atmosphere, discarding the possibility that the fuel is of fossil origin.

This means that the fuels used in the premier class will not be obtained by refining crude oil and, initially, may be either biofuels (fuels obtained from biological origins) or e-fuels (obtained by direct capture of CO2 in the atmosphere).
