Aldeguer: "Bagnaia didn't work well mentally, the past is the past"

"He couldn't maintain the potential he had. If the base of the bike is good you can adapt it from track to track, but you don't want to distort it. He wanted to compare with what he was doing in 2024. The past is in the past. You have to try to adapt."

MotoGP: Aldeguer: "Bagnaia didn't work well mentally, the past is the past"

Arriving in MotoGP after a decent 2024 season in Moto2 marked by three wins and several podiums, Fermin Aldeguer immediately came to the fore among the big boys by achieving one win, in Indonesia, and finishing in the top 3 on several occasions. Solid and rapidly improving performances that allowed him to be proclaimed "Rookie of the Year" .

In spite of this already reassuring title, the Gresini Racing rider, however, wants to raise the bar as he looks ahead to the coming championship, promising that he will do everything to earn an official Desmosedici bike.

"I didn't have the opportunity to beat Marquez because when I won he was not on the track. But just getting first place is already complicated," he told Marca. Having managed to win a MotoGP race, the Spaniard now dreams of the World Championship while being aware that he will have to square the circle.

"To do that, it's necessary to be in the first positions the whole championship. With this year's Marc I would have had to always finish second and then win all the races after his injury. Not easy. I think that in any case I'm not ready yet. I lack experience and I still make many mistakes. The level of the category to date is very high. However, I hope one day to be able to fight for the win," he reflected.

Clearly, his teammate remains the first opponent he will need to put behind him. "Should I be able to keep Alex Marquez behind me, it would mean that I'm doing a good job and fighting for something important since he will be among the candidates for the top three world championship positions. That said, it is not something to focus on. I simply want to learn, improve gradually and be frequently in the top 5," he revealed, not hiding his desire for 2027 when the 850cc bikes will make their debut.

"The official bike is a plus, a help. However, one must keep in mind that it leads to more pressure. You are obliged to get results and then there is always the uncertainty about whether performance will improve or worsen. In my opinion, the key is not so much being fielded by the factory team, but just having the GP27 and the support of the manufacturer, which will be crucial in a year when the bikes will be evolving from the first to the last race," was his opinion.

The technical revolution could bring with it a reshuffling of the cards. Something the Spaniard doesn't want to think too much about. "I want to believe that the rule change will not affect the forces on the track. I don't think the best bike will become the worst. Probably the level of the different brands will come closer together. In any case I will continue to aspire to the red bike," he remarked.

Among Ducati's rivals next year, there will undoubtedly be Aprilia, which has shown clear signs of improvement in the latter part of this season: "Bezzecchi has adapted well to the RS-GP and has improved, finishing the season very well. Martin is back from a bad 2025, but he has won a title and you can't exclude him from the battle for the top 5. In my opinion, Raul Fernandez and Ogura should not be forgotten either," he said.

About the collapse in Pecco Bagnaia's form, however, he argued, "Until he lost direction he was doing very well. Unfortunately for him Marc dominated and he couldn't catch up, but in my opinion he didn't work well mentally, with the bike and with the team. He couldn't maintain the potential he had. If the base of the bike is good you can make adaptations from track to track, but you don't want to revolutionize it. Also it should be kept in mind that everyone went very fast in 2025, so much so that in some circuits they lowered the times by half a second, but he wanted to compare with what he was doing in 2024. The past is in the past. You have to try to adapt."

In November, Aldeguer got to touch for the first time the GP25 he will use next year, and the feelings are already clear: "Between 2023 and 2024, the bike has changed a lot. However, the jump between that of 2024 and 2025 was smaller. For example, we didn't have the rear mass damper to limit the bike hopping."

His personal short-term goals include improving in qualifying. "In the Valencia test I worked on that and a little bit made progress coming within a tenth of first place. I will have to try to always put myself in the top six on Saturday so that I can make life easier for myself in the race. This year I think I was the rider with the most overtaking. I happened to start 18th and finish 8th, or start 15th and finish 5th. Being able to achieve a pole position would give me more joy than a win," he concluded.
