Pedro Acosta has been the surprise of 2024. Despite having zero experience in MotoGP the Spaniard has been able to showcase himself in a big way, frequently proving to be the most competitive KTM rider; in spite of this there has been no shortage of crashes however, as many as twenty of them so far and there is still one weekend left until the end of the championship.
"Some were my fault," he admitted during an interview with the Motosan website, "For example, in Japan on Sunday it happened to me because I wanted to overtake Bagnaia. Maybe they could have been less, but if you want to continue to learn from the other manufacturers and stay ahead you have to push."
Taking stock of his first year in the top class, the talent from Mazarron confided, "I had to deal with a lot of new things that I didn't expect, but that turned out to be decisive. When you come to the top class you have a basic level and no electronics skills. Also the work in the pit is very different and you talk about details. Even the smallest things make a difference. In the beginning the technicians would show me the data on the computer and I didn't worry much, now it's different and I ask a lot more than I did seven races ago."
The decisive moment for his growth process was the change of data technician. "With him we took an important step forward because I was able to get a better understanding of what I need. In MotoGP there is not much time to be fast, as already on Friday afternoon you have to be competitive."
Fifth in the overall he admitted to having one regret, that of not yet standing on the top step of the podium. "The appointment with victory is taking longer than expected. Honestly I had put a lot of hope on Jerez, because seeing what Binder and Miller had done in the past I thought there was a better chance. However, I notice that my pace is improving, so gradually I am getting where I want to be."
His 2025 season will be in the factory team alongside Brad, but he will be able to count on the proximity of Vinales and Bastianini, new team Tech3 riders. "Maverick has won in Suzuki, Yamaha and Aprilia and can provide a lot of insights, while Bastianini is fourth in the World Championship and I think he can provide us with a lot of information related to Ducati," was his reading of the situation before unveiling his own philosophy of life on the track, that of not making friends.
"From the beginning of my career I noticed that the Europeans were not thinking about making friends, only about winning, this maybe because you are at home and it is easier. Take Pedrosa for example. I personally never saw him smile when he lost, or was on the podium but not on the top step. In my opinion that is the essence of the sport and motorcycle racing," he concluded
