MotoGP: 'Coach' Lorenzo: "Vinales' talent is superior to Pedro Acosta's"

MotoGP 2026 is preparing to experience several fascinating storylines even before the lights go out. The year of Marc Marquez's confirmation with a possible 10th world title and WSBK champion Toprak Razgatlioglu's debut in Buriram, will also see the start of a second life for Jorge Lorenzo, back in the paddock in a new role, coach for Maverick Viñales.

The news, which emerged at the Valencia tests, confirm the transformation of Jorge, who from a former rider always on vacation between Switzerland and Dubai after marking an era on the track, will re-emerge as a mentor, determined to transfer his experience, method and winning mentality to KTM Tech3 rider Maverick Vinales.

It's not going to be a simple side-by-side exercise, but a structured project, and one that has already entered into full swing in the pre-season, including extreme training, motocross bikes and work sessions also shared with his father Chicho. It is the beginning of a path that aims to definitively reignite the talent of Viñales.

Lorenzo will work alongside Viñales on an ongoing basis in three key areas: physical and athletic preparation, with a strong focus on routines, training and recovery tailored to the current demands of MotoGP; strategic coaching, aimed at pressure and risk management, race consistency and decision-making at critical moments; and technical-sporting development, strengthening weekend analysis and planning.

The collaboration will be supported by a team coordinated by Lorenzo and fully aligned with the Viñales project, with the shared goal of achieving solid and sustainable progress in the medium and long term.

Maverick, a fast but controversial rider, is dreaming of a complete rebirth: he wants to win in MotoGP with a fourth different bike, a feat that would propel him into a historic dimension, and carve out a leading role for himself within KTM.

According to Lorenzo, Vinales still has so much untapped potential, superior even to rising star Pedro Acosta. "Pedro will become MotoGP world champion, I'm sure about that, but I sincerely believe that Maverick's speed and innate talent are superior to anyone else on the grid," he told Marca.

The former Yamaha champion looks at the entire grid with the eye of someone who knows the dynamics of the title: "Riders with less talent than Maverick have won the World Championship. Why not him?" It is a question that encapsulates the deeper meaning of this second life in the paddock: no longer a protagonist on the bike, but an architect of the success of others.

"The results never reflected his talent. Now our job is to bridge that gap," Lorenzo explained. And this is where the project takes shape: experience versus fragility, method versus discontinuity, leadership versus uncertainty.

While Jorge Lorenzo has already written a number of indelible pages as a rider, he now aims to add new ones to that chapter as a key man behind the scenes. MotoGP 2026 therefore might not only see the confirmation of Marquez and the surprise of Toprak, but also the revival of Viñales and the definitive consecration of a second career for Lorenzo, capable of making an impact again, in a different but perhaps equally decisive way.
