MotoGP, New fairing for Aprilia in Sepang: evolution of the “trunk”

With a fun nickname, the new part tested today by Lorenzo Savadori shows how the engineers at Noale have once again proven to be very attentive to aerodynamic development

The Shakedowns are always interesting if you want to get an early “peek” of the innovations on the bikes and, even today, something new is amidst in Sepang. Aprilia is one of the busiest on the aerodynamics. Last year, they had introduced a completely new fairing shape, cleverly nicknamed the “trunk”.

This fairing resembles a protruding step, and it didn’t go unnoticed by their rivals, so much so that first Honda and then Ducati experimented their own ideas inspired by the RS-GP, although they never ended up using them in the race.

At Noale, they were convinced of their idea (and the stopwatch confirmed it), so they further developed the part during the winter. And, today in Malaysia, we were able to witness the results of their areodynamics development. What was most striking was the shape of the lower part of the fairing, which narrows then widens, forming a kind of fin.

And that's not all. Thanks to Savadori, we can also appreciate another detail: a protruding groove at the bottom of the fairing, which makes it clear how extreme the modeling of the MotoGP bike is, with the aim, in this case, of cleaning the air flows as much as possible.

Another gem is the double spoon: not an innovation on the Aprilia, but it’s more proof of how the Venetian engineers are attentive to every detail.
