MotoGP, Schwantz: “Marquez is incredible, but he still lacks the extra something he had in Jerez”

“I was struck by what he said in Austin: ‘I also have to be able to find that extra something I had before I got hurt, because being at one hundred percent is not enough. You have to do better to be ahead of everyone in this category.”

MotoGP: Schwantz: “Marquez is incredible, but he still lacks the extra something he had in Jerez”

With 3 wins, compared to Quartararo’s 5 and Bagnaia and Miller each with 2, Marc Marquez still has some work to do in two races before the World Championship ends.

The eight-time World Champion can still, in fact, go on the hunt for a 4th place in the championship, beating Zarco and, even if it will be more difficult, Mir’s 3rd place could also be within his reach.

After all, Marc has gotten more points in the last four races than the two contenders for the World Championship: 83 points, compared to Bagnaia’s 66 and Quartararo’s 61. Could this mean that the Honda rider is now at 100% of his abilities? Because this is what the fans are wondering, especially after his victory at Misano. Marc Marquez is back as the rider he was before the Jerez accident.

Kevin Schwantz at Cycle Word answered this question. Kevin was idolized for his aggressive riding style, at times for his total lack of caution, and especially for his quick  comebacks, even when he wasn't in perfect shape.

When I got hurt, I always tried to get back in as soon as possible, because I knew that, if the accident had stopped me for two or three weeks, I would need that time, or even double, to get back in shape, and also to make my head work properly at three hundred per hour,” the legendary #34 recalled. “I don’t think Marc was cautious enough at the beginning of his return. Because you come back and think you’re at one-hundred percent. But you haven’t ridden the bike enough and you haven’t been up front with the best. You try, and it’s easy to have more accidents. I’m glad he didn’t get hurt again, and I think he thought, ‘I have to slow down a bit’.  That’s why I was struck by what he said in Austin. ‘ I have to get back to being one hundred percent here’, pointing to his shoulder. ‘And I have to get back to being one hundred percent here’, pointing his index finger at his head. ‘But, in the end, I also have to be able to find that extra something I had before I hurt myself, because being one hundred percent is not enough. You have to do better than this to be ahead of everyone in this category’.”

Schwantz then gave his opinion on the current state of health of the eight-time World Champion.

That's why I think Marquez has made an incredible comeback. Many wonder whether or not he’s at one hundred percent today. Well, I don’t know, but I say it’s that little extra something he talked about in Austin that he’s still lacking.”
