One can also be a prophet at home and Miguel Oliveira had the satisfaction of celebrating his first career pole position at Portimao. Many observers were keeping an eye on the Portuguese rider on a difficult track to interpret and the KTM man did not fail.
"Obtaining pole at home is certainly special, especially after so many years of not racing in Portugal - he said with clear satisfaction - Tomorrow I want to complete the job, even if I know that I will have to face some very strong opponents".
Miguel will still start as favourite for the win especially considering the pace shown in these days.
"I feel strong, I have a very promising pace and I feel confident, but not too much - he said - In free practice there was a lot of work to do, we had 4 different tyres to test and the set-up to sort out, I think nobody knows what will happen after 15 laps. However, I feel relaxed, at ease on the bike ”.
For Oliveira it will be a special Sunday not only because he will be racing on ’his’ home track, but also because it will be the last time with the Tech3 team colours. From next year he will be in the official team.
"It is a shame to leave this team for sure, I have met some nice people and I will certainly miss them - he explained - This is life, I wanted to take the opportunity to go to the official team where I can improve myself further. I am aware that my job will be more difficult there ”.
Tomorrow his parting gift could be a victory…
"I don't feel any particular pressure to race on this track, it's simply a privilege for me - he continued - The only thing I want to do is have fun".
The hope is to come back again...
“I hope that the other riders have had fun and think like me - he added - The most difficult point? I think it's the second sector, where there are fast and blind corners. However, everyone adapted quickly, I expected it because we are talking about the best riders in the world ”.
One final comment about his season…
“In a year that was so different from usual I would have liked to be more consistent, but I crashed 3 times. It was a good season anyway and it will allow me to be faster and more consistent next season” he concluded.
