MotoGP: Folger to replace Pol Espargarò in GasGas starting from Austin GP

Jonas Folger will replace Pol Espargarò starting from the Grand Prix of the Americas in Austin on the GasGas Factory Racing Tech3 team. As they wait to find out when the Spanish rider will be able to return after his terrible accident, the German rider will be taking his place. Pol returned to Spain last week to undergo jaw surgery in Barcelona on Tuesday and is expected to be discharged shortly.

This will be a return to the MotoGP for Folger, after his last appearance in this class with the Tech3 team in 2017 (but with Yamaha). In his debut season, he got on the podium at the Sachsenring, before deciding to leave the World Championship, when he was diagnosed with Gilbert’s syndrome. In 2019, he raced a few races in the Moto2, while he participated in the SBK World Championship with BMW in 2021. He started as a test rider for KTM this year.

First of all, I really hope Pol is doing well and gets back on his feet as soon as possible,” Jonas said. “On my part, I’m looking forward to racing and getting to Texas to see all the guys from my old team again. I hope we can do a decent job, and I know it’ll be a big challenge for me. This will also be a great opportunity to get up to speed and learn more about the bike.

Team Manager Nicolas Goyon added: “It’s clear that Pol needs time to make a full recovery, and our thoughts are still with him, and we’re in touch all the time. But, until he’s ready,  Jonas’ role in the tests, and his recent MotoGP experience, make him a perfect replacement. We have good memories with him, and he tested with us in Sepang in the winter. He’s a fantastic person, and we’re delighted to welcome him back.”
