On Sunday at Mandalika, the surprises followed one another at an amazing pace, some were bad (like Marquez not taking part), others were good, like seeing Quartararo finally competitive in the wet. “I have no words, I was expecting a dry race in which I knew I had the pace to win and then it started to rain…” usually the worst situation for the Frenchman. But not today where he seemed to ride as if there was no water.
"It took me time to realise that I could go that fast on the wet - said Fabio after receiving the trophy for second place - When you are lapping 10 seconds from the dry times you are already fast, but today I was less than 8, it only happened at the Sachsenring when they resurfaced the track. I didn't expect to get my elbow down in the wet, I understood a lot of things in this race that I hope to put to good use on other tracks as well ”.
What was the reason for this change?
"In the end, it's all a question of grip at the rear, when it’s there the M1 is fine – was his answer - The bike had 99% the same setting as last year, but today it was nice to ride because it had traction. It was this that made the difference. To improve we need to find more grip on the rear, understand how to do it ”.
The result was a podium conquered with force.
“I saw that I was in P5 and I thought that I could do a bit better than that result - he said - I gave everything, Zarco and Miller were fighting each other and it was time to push. I made some nice aggressive overtakes, something I was missing ”.
Miller, however, complained precisely of those overtaking moves, which the Australian considered too aggressive.
“I don’t care, because he’s the one in the past that has some aggressive moves, and I think my move was not really aggressive – retorted Quartararo – I just didn’t really expect to touch and my touch was not something big, was a really small touch. I don’t know if he watched it on TV, but before talking he better watch because I did nothing wrong. He just overtakes me in Turn 1, I saw he was running wide and I just crossed the line. From my side, if I make a bad move I say sorry. But that one, I have nothing to say.”
Also because there are better things to think about, like 3rd place in the championship, 3 points behind Bastianini.
“I will do my best and I will try to always be on the podium, but I know it will be difficult”.
What worries him above all is the next race, in Termas de Rio Hondo in two weeks.
"The race in Argentina will be the most difficult of the year for me - he declared - We know we have made some choices on the bike that will make the first part of the season complicated, but I will give my best and I think we can do well. Today's points are very important above all because obtained in these conditions, I never felt so good in the wet ”.
