Bad news for the Honda brand. Following several reports received from owners of motorcycles manufactured by the Japanese giant, the consumer protection agency, Codacons, has issued an urgent warning, asking Honda to take all necessary safety measures.
We do not take Codacons' complaints at face value, however, in several countries in the European Union and in the United States, a recall campaign has already been launched for several Honda CBR600RR and CBR1000 models, which aims at resolving a technical problem that could have potentially serious consequences for riders.
Specifically, the problem involves excessive oil consumption, resulting from a manufacturing defect of the surface of the engine block cylinder, which could cause the connecting rod bearings to seize completely in the event of oil starvation. This could, in turn, cause the rear wheel to lock up and/or engine oil to come into contact with the exhaust system, increasing the risk of fire, accidents, and/or injury.
Despite the recall campaign, several Italian owners of these motorcycles did not receive any notification of such. They, therefore, appealed to the consumer protection agency to report the obligation by the company to have the verification carried out independently on the manufacturer's website after entering the chassis number.
This is what prompted Codacons to take direct action against Honda Motor Europe Ltd Italia, requesting clarification and the immediate launch of a recall campaign in Italy, providing accurate and timely information to all motorcyclists involved. If the company does not respond promptly, formal injunction proceedings will be initiated in court.
