Maverick Vinales couldn't have hoped for more on day one of testing at Losail. He powered his Yamaha to the top of the timesheets on Thursday, but the Spaniard prefers to keep his feet firmly on the ground following the difficulties of ten days ago in Buriram.
“unfortunately in Thailand I had to deal with various braking issues, seeing as the rear tyre was sliding so much. Here at Losail I struggled early on today but then changed setting and sensations picked up. I focused especially on riding style and the M1 has been consistent. There are still various areas where we need to improve of course, but the situation's different, as this track is more favourable to us with very tight corners”.
Maverick may be smiling but he also knows it's too early to start celebrating.
“I'm pleased about the fastest time but I'm keeping calm. I need to continue working on the engine brake, trying to improve rear grip in braking”.
Ahead of the season-opener, he also talks about which frame he prefers.
“Right now nothing is decided but I can say that I feel better with the old frame and am therefore more inclined to use that. Nothing's certain yet though, as first I want to test everything and then decide”.
Looking back to one year ago, the Yamaha was flying in Qatar, dominating the test before winning the first race of the season.
“The M1 is very different compared to that of 2017, as are the tyres. Now I have less grip, especially through turns three, ten and eleven. The positive is that I can be competitive through the fast corners”.
