Cadalora: when I took pole using Michelins and Dunlops

Listening to Luca Cadalora, former world champion and current coach to Valentino Rossi, is always a pleasure. At Brno, during one of the breaks between sessions, he shared an entertaining anecdote with Piero Taramasso, Michelin MotoGP project manager, one which dates back to 1994 and proves just how much times have changed.

"I was riding the factory Yamaha 500 and we used Dunlop tyres - recalls the Italian - for quality reasons, I preferred to use the tyres produced in Japan but then unfortunately a serious earthquake destroyed the factory. This meant we only had a few tyres available and no new ones. I was struggling particularly with the front, so in Argentina they gave me permission to use the competitor's tyres. Of course Michelin didn't give me official tyres, but only production ones. I settled for that, and went out on track with a Michelin at the front and a Dunlop at the rear. To everyone's surprise I scored pole".
