MotoGP, Marquez: 53 points? A lot but not enough

"This podium is gold in terms of the championship.  I have to manage the advantage, I won't always be able to fight for the win"

Marquez: 53 points? A lot but not enough

Marquez version 2016 is simply a war machine, unstoppable like the best Schwarzenegger, bullet-proof like Robocop, he only needs a cape and he'd be Superman. At Brno he made the wrong tyre choice (as did most of the riders) but was still able to manage the situation, reach the podium and increase his championship lead over his main rival.

I didn't have the best strategy today - he admits - I thought that after ten laps or so we'd stop to change tyres but instead the track never dried out. So all I could do was manage the tyre, I was behind the Ducatis, trying to stay on wet asphalt”.

Almost until the end of the race.

When Crutchlow and Valentino passed me, I saw they had the hard tyre - he continues - I couldn't stick with them, but I pushed to reach the podium and this result is gold in terms of the championship".

Despite the fact he was competitive in the dry, Marc admits the wet conditions helped him.

If it hadn't rained, it would have been hard for me to fight with Lorenzo, but instead I've increased my lead over him in the standings and have lost only four points to Rossi - he explains - At Assen, in the wet, I didn't get on well, in Germany things went a little better and here we've been able to sort out the bike to better deal with these conditions”.

You have a 53-point lead now, which makes the title a serious possibility, seven races from the end.

It's a big lead, you can't lose those points in two races, but I have to see how best to manage them - he says - The most important thing is that I feel strong in all conditions, I showed that here in the dry and it's not the best track for my riding style. Having said that, I know that anything can happen, I have a good advantage but it's not enough”.

The fact remains that Marquez is getting the best out of his Honda.

It hasn't changed a lot since the first GP in Qatar, in fact it's almost the same - he underlines - Here at Brno the new wings have given me a hand, but they didn't work in Austria. I know that we have more favourable tracks ahead of us and others that are more difficult, but I won't always be able to go for the win.
