MotoGP, Quartararo: "I'm starting on pole, but if it rains I won't stay first for long"

"In the wet we have problems in acceleration, I'll try to gain experience". Vinales: "Le Mans is a nice circuit, but in the cold it becomes a nightmare"

MotoGP: Quartararo:

Like last year, Fabio Quartararo will start in front of everyone in his home Grand Prix at Le Mans. An excellent position, especially as the Frenchman was not so calm before starting qualifying. "I felt nervous - he explained - I went out on wet tyres, but then I saw that the asphalt was dry. On the last lap I pushed myself to the limit, I even risked crashing at Turn 11, and it was only in the parc fermé that I realized I had made pole ".

The Frenchman underwent an operation on his arm recently for compartment syndrome "and the most important thing is that now I have no problems" he reassured. If anything, the biggest doubts for the Yamaha rider come from the heavens above...

"In the dry I, Vinales and Miller have a very good pace, but in the wet I struggle a bit more - he admitted - I noticed it in FP3, as long as the track was very wet I was fine, then it started to dry out and the others improved a lot, I almost nothing. The problem is in acceleration, because I feel good in braking and mid-corner, but when I open the throttle the tyre starts to slide a lot ”.

If it rains tomorrow, Quartararo has no illusions…

“I'm starting from pole, but if it's wet I don't think I'll stay in that position very long - he said - It will be important for me to learn, gain experience, following Miller could help me. The fact is that I feel good in the wet, I don't think I'm slow, but then I look at the classification and I see myself at the bottom, it's not easy to accept ”.

Even in dry weather, however, no one has any clear ideas...

“It is difficult to prepare for the race when you do so few laps - he continued - Nobody really knows what will happen, luckily there are no big doubts about the choice of tyres. I think we will all use the soft tyres on both the front and rear. If, on the other hand, there was a flag to flag, instead, I wouldn't know what to expect, because I've never done the bike change in the race, it could be fun”.

Fabio would also like to race at Le Mans in a more favourable season…

"The later we have this Grand Prix the better, the best option would be to race here before the summer break – was his opinion - It's a complicated track, at the first corner it's easy to lose the front, as at the third and in many others".

His teammate Maverick Vinales, who will start alongside him tomorrow, completing a Yamaha 1-2 in qualifying, also agrees. “This is a nice circuit, but the cold makes it a nightmare, it's very dangerous. With hot weather the show would improve,” he said.

As for predictions for the race, the Spaniard didn’t have much to say...

"Today the goal was the front row, I reached it and I'm ready for tomorrow - he said - Even if it was drizzling on the last lap and it wasn't easy. I didn't make any big changes to the bike, I just tried to adapt it to the conditions. However, it is a job that we will have to do in the next Grands Prix, because I think we can improve both the setup and the weight balance ”.
