MotoGP, Luca Boscoscuro expands: "Four more Moto2 riders is a possibility"

In Texas, Luca Boscoscuro placed five of his eight Moto2 riders in the top six. However, he tempers his expectations for the upcoming races, but announces: "In 2024, I could equip two or four more riders."

MotoGP: Luca Boscoscuro expands:

After the Texas GP, the Italian Moto2 racing machine manufacturer Boscoscuro leads the Constructors' Championship with 59 points to Kalex's 58. The US GP brought company boss Luca "Bosco" Boscoscuro the greatest success in the company's history – with five riders in the top six.

Boscoscuro supplies three customer teams in the World Championship. Marina Rossi's successful ELF Marc VDS Racing Team is fielding Jake Dixon (winner in Argentina and Texas) and Filip Salac; the BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha team runs Tony Arbolino and former Moto3 World Champion Izan Guevara, while the QJMotor - Frinsa-MSi team hired young riders Ivan Ortolá and Oscar Gutierrez.

As always, "Bosco" also runs its own Speed Up team – with three-time Moto2 GP winner Alonso López and newcomer Celestino Vietti (also with three Moto2 GP victories), who replaced current MotoGP rookie Fermin Aldeguer after the 2024 season.

But with eight Moto2 World Championship riders, Boscoscuro only supplies half as many riders as its German rival Kalex.

"We have a good bike," "Bosco" modestly admits. But he also credits himself for having once again chosen the right riders. "Yes, of course, I always strive to find the best riders for my customer teams and my Speed-up team. Because the riders are the foundation for success. With the Marc VDS team, we have received a clear reinforcement, as Dixon also won two races in 2024. He's currently leading the World Championship, but it's hard to predict how the title fight will go all the way. Who else besides me believed in Ogura's title chances a year ago? I called him the favourite because I knew he was the strongest rider, even though he didn't have a good season in 2023. And that's exactly how it turned out."

While some experts are currently calling Belgian Barry Baltus (currently 7th in World Championship rankings) the surprise of the season. But Luca Boscoscuro disagrees. "Baltus was second in Qatar and seventh in Australia last year; this time he was sixth in Buriram and seventh in Austin. I don't see much difference in his performance compared to last year."

Boscoscuro didn't find a single customer team in 2022 when Aspar Martinez's racing team, like all other Pierer teams, switched to Kalex. He now equips a total of four GP teams and also runs his junior team in the Moto2 European Championship as part of the Junior GP racing series.

But the 53-year-old Italian seems to be handling this effort with ease. "When you have more riders, everything becomes easier," he counters. "Because you get more information for further development, which makes everything easier. That's the foundation for success. At the same time, you need fast riders to be able to improve the bike. At the moment, I'm in the fortunate position of having many fast riders. But we have to wait and see and not get euphoric, because our teams have only completed three of 22 Grands Prix. So far, we don't have a clear overview of the balance of power. We have to wait for three more Grands Prix; only when the riders have covered 2,000 or 3,000 km will we better understand what the riders' needs are for the bikes."

The Speed Up team owner has learned from past mistakes. "I also supplied six Moto2 World Championship riders in 2013, but back then I simply sold the bikes to any team that was interested. That was a mistake."

A look at the 2013 World Championship standings shows that the Speed Up riders only finished 11th (Corsi), 14th (De Angelis), 15th (Pasini), 21st (West), and 23rd (Ricky Cardús).

Today, Luca Boscoscuro doesn't rule out supplying other teams in the future if the rider quality meets his expectations. "Two or four more bikes are conceivable," Boscoscuro explained in an exclusive interview with GPOne.com. "I think that would be better for the entire Moto2 category, because in the past, Kalex often supplied more than 20 riders. That was really bad for the overall picture of the championship."

After the COVID crisis, Boscoscuro employed nine people, but the manpower didn't increase significantly since then. "We now employ three more people, because basically each rider only needs one bike a year. But of course we also have to produce sufficient spare parts."

What does the successful team owner and motorcycle manufacturer expect from the Qatar GP next weekend?

"We expect different conditions at every Grand Prix. I hope the weather cooperates better, because it was really complicated in America. We only had one dry practice session, and Dixon managed to secure pole position. But for riders like Vietti and some others, the wet race on Sunday was complicated... I'm not dreaming of a repeat of the Texas result. I'll be happy if all eight riders finish in the top ten," laughed "Bosco."

Riders World Championship standings: 1. Dixon, Boscoscuro 59 points. 2. Canet, Kalex, 46. 3. Gonzalez, Kalex, 45. 4. Lopez, Boscoscuro, 30. 5. Arbolino, Boscoscuro, 28. 6. Ramireu, Kalex, 27. 7. Baltus, Kalex, 23. 8. Holgado, Kalex, 23. 9. Agius, Kalex, 19. 10. Vietti, Boscoscuro, 16.

Constructors' World Championship standings: 1. Boscoscuro, 59 points. 2. Kalex 58. 3. Forward 10.
