MotoGP, Zarco: It would be wrong not to be happy

"I was ready for the final battle, but Dani created a gap that was impossible to close. The soft compound? The right choice, my problems are other ones"

MotoGP: Zarco: It would be wrong not to be happy

The terrible rookie strikes again. At Valencia, Johann Zarco once again proved his great speed astride the 2016 Yamaha, missing the win by only hundredths of a second. And for those who talk about a possible disappointment in the missed win, the Frenchman responds with wisdom.

“I must be happy since being sad about missing the win would be the wrong way to interpret my race. The start was negative. In fact, throughout the weekend I had some problems in this area, but then I felt good and once I moved into the lead, I was able to push, but without getting away at the front.”

From there, number 5 was the only one, along with Pedrosa, who did not make any mistakes.

“Marc overtook me but he made a mistake that let me go back into the lead, also because he had other concerns today. I realised that it could have been the right chance to win, but without risking a lot because I was at the limit. I prepared for the final battle, but when Dani overtook me on the first turn of the last lap, he created a small gap that I was unable to close without losing the front end. I thought about attacking him on the last corner, but it wasn’t possible. I am satisfied with second place.”

The team Tech3 rider was once again the best Yamaha rider today, despite the fact that the factory team used the 2016 frame, but he minimises and refutes any doubts about the choice to put on the softest tyre.

“I was not aware of any of that because it isn’t my business. I just tried to be competitive for the entire weekend. In general, when you are in difficulty it is not easy to find a solution, but I think that thanks to the tests, they will get back to being fast. I don’t think that the problem was tyre choice, since my troubles stem from other aspects and with the other tyres I would not have had the same feeling. If I stayed with Dani, it means that the tyre choice was right and the reason I didn’t win was the pass on turn one.”

In conclusion, Zarco reveals a funny anecdote about the day yesterday involving him and… Marquez’s mum.

“Yesterday evening, Marc’s mum asked me to be careful at the start and I reassured her regarding my behaviour (he laughs).”
