The first day of F1 action at the Zandvoort circuit ended with Lando Norris in dominating form. Already the leader in the morning, the McLaren driver put everyone behind him also in the afternoon despite a session characterized by general frenzy due to the possible arrival of rain and two red flags for the exit at Turn 3 of Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and later at Turn 1 of Alex Albon (Williams).
It must be said that the Englishman in Free Practice 2 had to sweat hard for the position as his teammate Oscar Piastri came in behind him by just 87 thousandths and third chaser Fernando Alonso by 89 thousandths. More distant, by more than three tenths, was the fourth placed man, namely George Russell in a Mercedes, ahead of the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, author of a rare mistake in the morning.
The two Ferraris did not appear to be particularly on good form with Lewis Hamilton sixth and protagonist of a spin, and Charles Leclerc eighth. Yuki Tsunoda in Red Bull was finally seen again in the group of 10, as positive was also the performance of Franco Colapinto, ninth, for Alpine, and Nico Hulkenberg for Haas. Finally, the difficulties continue for Andrea Antonelli, eleventh, on the gravel in FP1 and forced to do some extra work in the afternoon session that took him out of the hunt for a quick time.
