Michael van der Mark is one step closer to saying goodbye to BMW. Barring any sensational last-minute upsets, the Dutchman will not continue his adventure in 2026 riding the M 1000 RR. At this point, the team will have to find a rider to join Danilo Petrucci for next season.
In recent months BMW has sounded out multiple paths, from Lecuona to Miller, via Vinales and Canet, but without being able to make the negotiations final.
Hence the idea of evaluating another rider, namely Marcel Schroetter. According to reports, the German, currently racing in Supersport with WRP Wepol's Ducati V2, will test the BMW today on the second and final day of testing in Jerez.
For him it will be a chance to get to know the new bike and grind out the kilometers, trying to find the necessary confidence. For the team, on the other hand, it is an opportunity to see whether or not the German rider has the qualities to pick up Michael van der Mark's baton.
At the same time BMW has also been talking with Miguel Oliveira, who is one step away from saying goodbye to Yamaha Pramac, as well as Pol Espargarò. In fact, there has been no shortage of contact with Albert Valera, who looks after the interests of the current KTM test rider, just back from the Hungarian GP.
In fact, the Spaniard is keen to return to racing in 2026, and for this very reason the BMW path has been sounded out. We will see in the coming weeks what will be the evolution of the situation.
