A post appearing on the Superbike Instagram page yesterday, promising some big news, had fans of the production-derived series on the edge of their seats. The mystery has now been resolved. In 2019, the weekend schedule will see the introduction of a third Superbike race, something that had been on the cards for a while.

For next year's championship, Race 1 at 2pm on Saturday is thus confirmed, while the new addition is a sprint race on Sunday at 11am. The weekend then concludes with Race 3 at 2pm CET, the same length as Race 1.

World SBK Executive Director Daniel Carrera is very pleased about this development: “To bring a third ‘sprint race’ into the WorldSBK format for 2019 is something we have been planning for a long time now, so we are delighted to see the plans coming together. We are committed to bringing exciting races to the fans year on year, and we think the addition of a sprint race will add to the WorldSBK experience. We are continuing to work on the final adjustments and hope to bring more details in the near future.”
