Eugene Laverty had something of a shock six laps from the end of Race 1. At the Rivazza, the Aprilia rider made contact with Lowes' Yamaha, ending up on the ground. His bike impacted against the crash barriers before bursting into flames.

The Irishman was taken to the circuit medical centre as a precaution but only has some fairly minor bruising. Laverty was therefore able to breathe a sigh of relief:I made contact with Alex through that section – he explained - perhaps he took a tighter line than he should have. The problem is that my brake stopped working, I wasn't able to brake at all. I tried about three time, but the bike wouldn't stop and I ht the ground”.

The Aprilia rider can see the humorous side: “What was I thinking in that moment? I was calm, I was thinking how I have good experience when it comes to crashing – he jokes - then I saw the fire and was quite shocked”. Laverty hasn't forgotten past events: “At Phillip Island in 2012 I had a really bad one – he added– last year there was the one at Sepang. I'm fine anyway, ready for race 2. The bike proved to be competitive today and so I'm quite confident”.
