Toprak Razgatlıoğlu can't hide a bit of disappointment after the first race in Most. Starting from pole position, the Yamaha Turkish rider wanted the win and isn't afraid to declare it. However, it was the weather that intervened to mess up his plans. With a track with damp asphalt, choosing the tyres proved to be a gamble, but Toprak and his team got it right and only had to give way to Rea at the chequered flag.
“I had no experience with the intermediate tyre, I had only used it 3 times in my entire career - confessed Razgatlıoğlu - At the start of the race I saw Rea pushing, I tried to follow him, but we know he is very fast in those conditions, while I didn't know the tyre limit. I was slow in the first laps, then I improved but not enough to win. I think I was 15 seconds from the first at the start and I finished at 4 behind, I was strong, if I had been strong from the start I could have won. I didn't crash, I did a good job and took important points for the championship. Now I'm 54 points behind Bautista, it’s a good number,” he joked about his race number.
You recovered a lot; do you think that tomorrow you will be able to take advantage again?
"I don't know, but I think so. Alvaro isn't strong this weekend, it's as if he was lost even if I don't know why. In the dry I would have been fast, I found a good set-up and I was very happy with my pace this morning, with used tyres I was very fast. My plan was to break away on the dry track, but it rained."
Was it difficult to gamble on intermediate tyres?
“I usually use slicks or rain, that's what I think, but this time we gambled on the intermediates. We also changed the rear tyre at the last moment, I had put on a slick but the second and third sectors were wet. Maybe I could have kept it and would have been faster in the last 5 or 6 laps, that's just my thought. I'm not very happy, the team did a good job and me too, but my plan for this weekend was to win all 3 races. We'll see tomorrow, maybe I'll be able to win 2, it will depend on the weather, and I hope I won't find intermediate conditions like today".
If you could do it again, would you make the same choice?
“I wasn't sure about the slicks before the race, while now I would have chosen them. With the intermediates, in the first laps, it was like having them: I couldn't lean and brake. Anyway, the race is over and now let's think about tomorrow”.
