“With the GP19 I found it difficult in the time attack, but with the GP21 everything is easier. The last 5-6 laps will be decisive in the race. Watch out for Suzuki, Honda and Marquez "

MotoGP: Bastianini says that if his pace is good, he’ll go for the win

After this morning’s feat in which he just managed to scrape through for the decisive Q2, despite unfavourable weather and asphalt conditions, under the early evening spotlights of the Lusail International Circuit, Enea Bastianini obtained the first-ever front row slot in MotoGP thanks to a lap of 1'53.158 that earned him second on the grid for the Sunday race. It was a performance that confirmed the ability of the 2020 Moto2 Champion also (finally) on a flying lap, his Achilles heel last year, as well as the worth of a well-proven bike such as the Desmosedici GP 21.

"I am very happy because over the winter I worked hard to be ready here in Qatar, thanks above all to the help of the team. In 2021, with the 2019 GP, I had many difficulties in the time attack, but now with the current version everything is easier. The GP21 is very smooth, I can fully get the best out of its power and take it to the limit. I also feel more relaxed psychologically”, the Gresini Racing Team rider said.

What are your feelings about tomorrow's race?

“The pace is good, but the same goes for Suzuki, Honda, especially Marc, just to name a few. For me it will be a particular race as I will start up front for the first time, usually I was used to having to recover right away. Even if I don't know if it is an advantage or a disadvantage! Also, the choice of tyres will play a crucial role, there seems to be little difference between soft and medium, as well as the asphalt conditions that we will find. I don't know if I'll have the chance to win or get on the podium, but I'll try ”.

Do you already have a strategy in mind?

“I have no idea, soon I will talk about it with the team. I think the best thing is to follow your instincts - he admitted - I won’t hold back if I feel that I have what it takes to pull ahead, otherwise I'll manage my energy for the end of the race ”.

Who do you think your main rivals will be?

“Usually on this track many riders are competitive. The Suzuki has a lot of cornering speed, while we on the Ducatis manage to brake later. We still have to understand the real potential of our opponents. Last year the leading group was crowded for a good part of the race, only to break up in the final stages. Tomorrow, however, it will probably be a lot smaller, even if the last 5-6 laps will prove to be equally decisive, so I think it is important to maintain as much tyre as possible ”.

Do you reckon Bagnaia is in difficulty?

“He is finding it harder than expected, however, never say never in the race,” he concluded.
