SBK, Forés: "I've found the confidence I wanted with the Ducati"

The Spaniard closes day one in third place, Lowes: "The Yamaha can place top five"

SBK: Forés: "I've found the confidence I wanted with the Ducati"

The Phillip Island track has once again highlighted the abilities of Xavi Forés, with Rea listing him as one of the favourites for tomorrow. The Spaniard hasn't held back today, setting the third fastest time behind the current world champion.

You really like this track.

“I like all those tracks where the bike is fast (he smiles). I can be competitive and consistent lap after lap and I'm pleased, especially after the problems we had during winter testing with the weather limiting what we could do. I had my doubts, I must admit, after the Qatar race, but I'm relaxed now".

Can we say you've never felt so good on the Panigale as you do now?

“No, even at the end of last year I felt competitive. Unfortunately I didn't get a lot of riding in after the last race and I was worried I wouldn't be prepared coming here. Luckily, I've been competitive right from day one here in Australia, particularly with the long runs”.

What's been your main step forward?

“We've worked on the electronics and this has helped me to manage the tyres. I don't have to push so hard to set a time, also I'm feeling more comfortable on the Panigale, I've found the confidence I need. It's a good feeling”.

Rea has picked you out as one of the favourites for tomorrow. Can you reach the podium do you think?

“If there's a chance then I will try, but I prefer to keep my feet on the ground. The season is long and so I don't want to throw it all away during race one. Rea and Davies have more experience than me”.

Today has also seen Yamaha take a significant step forward. Alex Lowes  was able to ride his R1 into sixth place, proving that last year's issues are now just a distant memory. The road is still long, but number 22 is moving in the right direction.

“We're doing great work, I didn't think we could improve in such as short period of time. After each exit the gap from the leaders is coming down and I feel good on the bike. The work completed during testing is bringing the results we hoped for”.

Where do you feel most competitive?

“We've taken an important step with the frame, the bike handles better now, especially in the changes of direction. We're on the right track, but still have a lot to do”.

Today you finished sixth. Will you aim for more tomorrow?

“I'll try to continue to move closer to the front, knowing that it won't be easy, as they will surely improve too. I hope I can finish top five, right behind Kawasaki and Ducati, we have the potential to do that”.

Dosoli told us that you've altered your work method over the winter.

“Last year everything was complicated, this time I've started out with a different approach, focusing mainly on race pace. In the past I was always looking for the flying lap time, often making mistakes and that didn't go well. I have to say I've learned from the many crashes”.
