A Marquez triumphed again in the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez. But, this time, it was Alex and not his illustrious brother, Marc, who ran into his second major mistake this season after the one in Austin. Also on the podium were a monumental Fabio Quartararo and Pecco Bagnaia, who was hsppy to score major points but only played offense when he had to defend himself from Marc's attacks in the first lap.
Our Carletto Pernat tells us his perspective on what happened in Jerez, sipping Prosecco DOC, as always.
"The Jerez Grand Prix and, this time, the man of the day is really Alex Marquez. There's always little talk about him. Maybe you'd expect something even more important from this guy but, today, the most important thing he did was win the GP with great merit. He's a tough rider, who's already won two world championships, and he's on a team that probably might be the best technicians, but they're certainly among the best in the world. He has proven that he's strong headed. I'll say something that may sound like sports heresy, but I think that, in his head, Alex is stronger than his brother Marc.
Marc certainly has natural talent on his side, like few others. Maybe Quartararo comes close. But Alex is really head strong, and it's very difficult to have a brother like Marc, who's won eight world championships, and fight with him, despite the bond they have. Really, a ten plus to Alex Marquez and the Gresini team, which has proven to be very strong. It won with every rider it's had, from Bastianini, to Di Giannantonio, to Marc and Alex Marquez.
We've always said that, besides the real opponents in the field, on the track, Marc's opponent remains Marc. Even today, he went too far, but that's part of his way of being, and there's nothing to be done about it. He can hardly handle races, especially when he has a bad start like today. When he then saw himself bottled up in third place, he lost it, and that's where you make a mistake.
A Bagnaia we'd like to see do better. We'd always want him like he was the first three laps, when he suddenly passed Marc Marquez. That's the real Bagnaia. He's not a conservative rider who finishes third in the end. Quartararo beat him as well, and there's nothing you can do about it. When a star rider has a bike that aslightly resembles the others, he puts his own spin on it. Fabio showed that he really is a phenomenon.
A podium finish with a Yamaha that no one expected to see up in front so soon. Max Bartolini's work is starting to pay off. Another GP in which all the factories are present in the top ten. This is important because it means that the gap is narrowing. A feat at the finish, minus the falls, was made by KTM, which put four riders in the top ten. That's a lot. There's Vinales, who's in top form.Maybe he's figured out how to ride it better than the others. Maverick also risked getting a podium. In Honda, Luca Marini finally got a top ten, while Enea Bastianini made a good comeback, but he needs to qualify better.
A world championship that has reopened. It looked like a possible domination by Marc Marquez, but this wanting to overdo it is starting to be a burden, given the two zeros. Maybe Bagnaia is right in being how he is at this stage. The points matter more. But I wouldn't have expected Pecco behind even Alex Marquez. Demerit of one or merit of the other? We'll find that out later. But, for sure, Alex has takken a remarkable step forward and has a competitive bike. Let's wait for Le Mans. I think Yamaha can be fast there. It would be a sight to see talents like Marc, Fabio, and also Pecco and Alex fight until the end. We'll see."
