Marco Bezzecchi arrives at Jerez on the track where he last earned a podium in MotoGP. It was 2024 and the current Aprilia rider concluded in third place behind Marc Marquez. The past is behind him, however, because in his mind there is only the present, represented by the road ahead with the RS-GP. Obviously, it is not an easy path, if we consider that in this beginning of the season the Noale-based team has been called upon to deal with the double accident of Jorge Martin.
"Jerez is a track that evokes good memories for me," he said, "I have in fact finished on the podium in all three categories, but this time I have no expectations. These sometimes create some problems. However, I want to be confident that we will do a good job and that at home the guys have worked hard."
Will there be anything new in terms of set-up?
"I honestly don't know, we'll see. I am, however, confident in my team and the manufacturer I represent. Without Martin I'm getting used to carrying on the development, aware that I have a lot of work to do. Of course there is Lorenzo Savadori and the Trackhouse team, but the fact remains that the absence of a rider like Martin, who I wish he returns as soon as possible, is not easy."
Have you heard from him?
"I sent him a message after Qatar. He was with his family, his companion."
What do you expect from Monday's test?
"Every test is important, I think it is crucial to try something that will allow us to be faster and more competitive. It will be an important day, because we know where to focus, which is stability, the use of the new tire and the early stages of the start of the race. As I said it will be a big day of work, because until Aragon we won't have any other days."
Going back to the beginning of the Championship, what were the expectations for this start of the season?
"I am honest in saying that I had thought about drawing a line after the first four races to draw conclusions. I didn't think much of it, because in the end it was a pretty big change to go from Ducati to Aprilia, and as a result I didn't know what to expect. The priority was always to put my all into it, knowing that we faced some difficulties that I expected. At the moment I am suffering in qualifying, thanks among other things to the fact that I have always had to work alone. I think to date I have done no more than two time-attacks."
Here at Jerez there will be Savadori again....
"It looks like from the outside I've been doing everything by myself, but that's not the case. Lorenzo always gives us a lot of help and it is great that he is with us. He is very good at his job. Of course we are all waiting for Martin, since it is a problem not having him here with us."
On a human level, how heavily does Martin's absence weigh?
"It is obvious that there is a lot of disappointment, but our skill has to be to put these emotions aside, working and not giving a shit about everything. It's not nice to say that, but it's the reality."
