Qualifying had deluded him and his performance in the Sprint Race, which saw him in the podium zone until the final stages, except to then slip down to fifth place, had given the impression that it might have been another good GP from Fabio Quartararo, but instead the Yamaha rider had to settle for eighth place due to the usual problems that characterize the M1.
"It was tough," he confessed at the end of the Qatar weekend, "The first few laps were not fun at all as we experienced more or less the usual problems of when the grip is low. Later on things improved, but by then it was too late. Unfortunately, we were not able to replicate the Sprint and that was the best we could get. We'll see how it goes in the next few rounds, but we need to be able to rely on innovations to allow us to progress. After Le Mans we will have a test in Italy and at that moment we might find something useful. As for us, we are working hard and trying different things, but never the things we really want. We have to face the situation step by step. The will is to fight with the best as soon as possible, but I know it will take time to get there."
Regarding tire degradation El Diablo instead confessed critically, "I was expecting a better performance in the race start and then a bigger drop, so in terms of tire wear it went well. The problem is that in the opening stages everyone is more competitive than us and they overtake us. We are lacking grip and power, and in some sections the bike tends to wheelie, so it is impossible to ride well and make overtakes. Our only real strength is braking, but if you can't prepare a maneuver, you don't need it."
Finally, on tire pressure, he said instead: "There are some circuits where even if it goes up or down it is not a problem and in Lusail, unlike Thailand and Aragon, I don't know why, even if it increases there is no need to worry."
