MotoGP: Qatar Grand Prix: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Marc Marquez defeats the last taboo. Maverick Vinales' podium deflates along with his tires. Pecco Bagnaia has to settle for the result one more time. Jorge Martin's comeback ends in the worst possible way.

THE GOOD - Every once in a while, in the desert, a rider wakes up and decides to be the fastest of all. If that rider is Maverick Vinales, it's trouble for the opposition. Top Gun took flight on a KTM that seemed unable to take off. He dreamed of a poker of victories with four different bikes, then Marquez woke him up and the Stewards made him go through a nightmare. He took the applause, though, and deserved it.

THE BAD - Low tire pressure causes high blood pressure in spectators. Until Sunday night, we had liked the fact that it was Simon Crafar in charge of the Stewards. Then the usual story. Forty-plus minutes to penalize Vinales. After the podium, the TV interviews, the press conference. In MotoGP, speed is a quality for everyone but the judges.

THE UGLY - Who said fortune favors the bold? Jorge Martin tried, crashed, got run over. He added new fractures to his collection and earned himself more days to spend in the hospital. Come on Jorge, better days will come.

THE DISAPPOINTMENT - Bezzecchi at least tries, Ogura keeps surprising, only Raul Fernandez is never seen. Never a flicker, a glimmer, nothing, like a flat soda drink abandoned on the table. He is Aprilia's man down.

THE CONFIRMATION - He handles the tires, opponents and boredom with equal ease. Marc Marquez is back to having fun, as he wanted to. He did not, however, specify that he would be the only one to do so. What do you want to say to him? He says it all with his racing.

THE MISTAKE - To experience the thrill of riding his Ducati with half its aerodynamics, Alex Marquez decided to scrape it against Di Giannantonio's. He took a long lap, apologized, didn't even spoil his race too much. It could have been better, but it could have been worse.

THE SURPRISE - Fermin Aldeguer is starting to deliver on his promises. In the first GPs he seemed to be a fish out of water, in Qatar - where there is no water - he started to swim. In style.

THE PASS - The one on Marc Marquez was pleonastic, so Pecco Bagnaia had to settle for a fight with Morbidelli. It cost him time and some rubber, but it was good. These days, you have to make do.

THE CURIOSITY - Marc Marquez took podium number 114, equaling Jorge Lorenzo. Better with 199 is only Valentino Rossi, it's always him.

I TOLD YOU SO - Marc Marquez on Friday: "I would sign for a third place in practice in Qatar." Alex Marquez on Saturday: "I would sign to always finish 2nd until Valencia." It is not sufficient to have the last name Marquez for the game to succeed.
