MotoGP, Alex Marquez: "The incident with Di Giannantonio is my fault. I apologized."

"I tried to attack him at the wrong time and place. I made a mistake. Did I race without wings? The bike was a bit strainge but ... it was flying! I only realized it after the finish line."

MotoGP: Alex Marquez:

It was an eventful GP for Alex Marquez, to say the least. A 6th place finish, all things considered, is a good one for the way things had turned out for the Team Gresini rider. But he has something to complain about this time. "A lot of things happened. I'll start ... from the start. I kicked off well but, at the first corner, I didn't understand what happened. Then I talked to Marc, and he told me that he closed the throttle after losing the rear. I thought he was accelerating. I did too, and we touched. Anyway, we were able to continue the race without any problems," he said.

Then?
"I saw that Marc wasn't pushing. He was managing the tires by letting Franco go, and I thought it was a good strategy. On the third lap, Di Giannantonio attacked me at turn ten, and I tried to pass him again at turn twelve. It was neither the right time nor the right place to make that maneuver, and I totally made a mistake. They gave me a long lap. I accept it, and I apologize to Fabio and his team."

Was it all your fault?
"Maybe Diggia closed the trajectory a little bit, but it was the right thing to do. When they attack you, you have to defend yourself. I can't say anything to him. I'm the one who was wrong and not him. When it happens, you have to take responsibility and accept it. There's nothing more to add."

Were you able to clear things up with Di Giannantonio?
"I tried to talk to him, but they told me it wasn't the right time, and I understand that."

How did your race continue?
"I tried to stay calm, keep my pace, and make up some positions. I brought home some good points for the championship. <there are many positive aspects."

Did you realize you had lost all the wings on the left side of the bike?
"I didn't realize how many wings I had lost. I didn't realize it until after the finish line. The bike seemed to fly. I was passing everyone," he said, laughing. "During some braking and fast corners, the feeling wasn't right. Everything was a bit strange, but the bike wasn't bad. I lapped at 1'52"8. I was fast, that's good, but I made a mistake."

Without that mistake, what position could you have aimed for?
"Today, the bike was really good, the team did a great job, but you never know."
