Jack Miller wasn't able to replicate the magic of Austin. While he was still gloating over his 5th place finish in the Texas GP, he tried adopting a bold strategy for the Qatar Sprint Race but, in the end, his result was a meager 19th place, well below expectations.
Knowing he had nothing to lose since he was starting from 16th place, the Prima Pramac rider decided to mount the soft rear instead of the medium. "We took a chance and, in the end, it didn't pay off," he told the press. "I honestly thought I'd start to suffer after eight or nine laps. Instead, I was already in trouble by the fourth. I didn't expect it at all. Maybe it was because of the lower temperatures, the sand, or something on the track. Either way, even though I was hoping for more, it was worth it."
Thinking about the early stages of the race, the Australian rider explained: "I had a decent start but, by taking turn one carefully, I got stuck. Later, I caught up with some of my rivals and noticed that there was a tussle between Marini, Ogura and, I think, Bagnaia. Once I got my pace, I overtook Luca, but I then started to suffer in entring corners, first in the last change of direction and then everywhere. For Sunday's race, I'll opt for the mediums, because I'm convinced I can do well."
Finishing just one position ahead of the former KTM rider was Augusto Fernandez who's standing in for an injured Miguel Oliveira at Lusail. "It wasn't bad. Although I'm still behind, I improved in terms of speed and pace. I was able to work on the set-up by adapting the M1 to my needs a bit. I felt more like a rider than a test rider," he said, as he gave his feedback.
