It's always a matter of how you want to see the glass. Morbidelli seems to be trying to convince himself that it's half full. A 4th place in the Austin GP isn't a result you'd toss but, with Marc Marquez down, he would've gladly kept his teammate, Di Giannantonio, and his friend, Bagnaia, company on the podium.
"It went very well. It was a solid weekend. A fourth and fifth place means a good weekend, and I can't complain," Franco said, optimistically. "Speaking of myself, I was a little too far from the best yesterday. Today, I stepped up and got closer, until I had a drop. That said, I felt I had potential on another Sunday, but up to a certain point. Anyway, it went well."
Even in the minutes leading up to the start, which was then delayed when all the riders (or almost all) chose to leave the grid en masse and change bikes and tires.
"I knew the situation was very confusing, as was the weather," the VR46 team rider explained. "In those conditions, everyone wants to get the maximum and, as soon as I saw other riders running to the pit to get the bike with the dry tires, I did it too, to cover my back. Fortunately, everything went well. We had all started with the slicks."
How was the asphalt?
"It wasn't wet. The track was drying but, on the alignment lap, the riders with slicks fell. The conditions were really borderline, but I think we put on a good show in the end," he said.
Maybe the few who were lined up with the slicks didn't take it as well.
"My concern was, starting with rain tires, those who had mounted slicks would've a big advantage. Most had wet tires, so that's what happened. It had happened to me in the past in Argentina," he recalled.
