The surprise on Saturday in Portimão was undoubtedly Andrea Locatelli, with a picture-perfect Race 1, a third place, and the best Yamaha at the finish line for the rider from Bergamo.
Once again, Andrea was able to make a difference riding the R1, confirming his potential and going beyond all expectations. He was satisfied, especially about the work carried out during the last week after Australia.
"On Friday, we worked with the race in mind, without seeking a time," he said. "The priority has always been the sensation. Today, I had the confidence I was hoping for, and I think I brought home a deserved result. I'm a rider who doesn't like to talk, much less cry. Maybe I should do that, but that's not my goal. I believe in myself and the work we do, so that everything will go well."
We know you have super concessions. What intervention was carried out on the chassis?
"That's a question for Yamaha. The sensation was more or less the same. What we did worked, and there were no issues. But the chassis is the same as always."
What requests have you made to Yamaha to direct development?
"I can make a lot of requests, and the guys from home are looking for solutions. The priority, however, is to have a good foundation, trying to take steps forward to be at the top. I have my own style, and I can't change it."
Your contract is about to expire. Are you ready to sign a renewal?
"I'd sign with everyone to try all the bikes," he said jokingly. "Certainly, what's going to happen in the future in this championship isn't my area of expertise. On my part, it's going to be a difficult decision, because the priority is to value myself and, once we sit at the table, we'll figure out the plan for the future. Once I assess the best situation, I'll decide, because the goal is to fight and win races."
