At least on paper the new Balaton Circuit will host the fourteenth round of the MotoGP calendar scheduled for the weekend of August 22-24, but to date doubts continue to remain due to the fact that there is still no FIM homologation, despite the facility opening in 2023.
Back in 2024, the track was supposed to see SBK in action, but then everything was cancelled. This time, however, the final go-ahead should be close, as hinted by Federation President Jorge Viegas, who was keen to reassure everyone that there will be no further surprises.
"I have been informed that everything is proceeding according to plan. Track and safety facilities are the same. The process is concluded for MotoGP, so as a result there is compliance for the production-derived bikes as well - were his words as resported exclusively to the Speedweek website - Our safety delegate Tome Alfonso is, however, keeping a close eye on both the work at Balaton and Brno."
And it was precisely the federation member who visited the Hungarian circuit on February 13 to take stock of the situation. "The work is ongoing and in line with the plan received last November. The timetable has been met, as well as the FIM criteria, so I believe that the closure of the construction site will take place by mid-June," he said.
At 4.115 kilometers long and in a counterclockwise direction, the circuit has a layout consisting of six right-hand and 10 left-hand turns, with a width of 15 meters. There are 48 pits, while the fixed grandstand allows for 10,000 people. The temporary stands can cater for another 120 thousand.
