Marc Marquez made a full haul while Pecco Bagnaia had to absorb the blow. This is what the Thai GP, which saw the triumph of the #93, told us. We talked about what happened at Buriram with Marco Melandri, who is gearing up for an Enduro race in Cecina on an electric mountain bike.
Clear and transparent words were expressed by the former rider, who made his assessment of the situation.
"In Thailand exactyly what I expected to happen happened, that is, the return of Marquez to victory - the Italian from Ravenna told us - I still remember 2013, that is, his first year in MotoGP. As soon as I saw him on the bike I said to Alberto Vergani, "this one wins the World Championship at the first attempt!" His was a phenomenal style and he rode spectacularly, in fact we know well the way it went."
Which Marc did you see in Thailand?
"Marc had been waiting for this moment for five years, given how much he suffered through injuries from Honda's lack of competitiveness. Right now he is much hungrier than Bagnaia, and when you see him on the Ducati he seems to be breaking in the bike, in fact he doesn't even push hard. Before he was on the limit, but now you see him almost strolling, in a serene and calm way. He is a pit bull, biting you and leaving his mark."
On the other side of the box Pecco could do nothing but absorb the blow....
"Bagnaia doesn't lack speed, maybe he has the same as Marc. The problem is Marc's hunger and at the same time the importance he has inside the box. I say that because Marquez is a rider who makes you fall in love, makes you feel good and as a result goes to alter certain dynamics. From the outside people may have certain thoughts about him, but from the inside he is a person who transmits serenity and tranquility to the environment. On top of all that he is a phenomenon."
What advice would you give Bagnaia?
"In my opinion the Ducati box is split, because as I said Marc is someone who changes the dynamics. Pecco has to isolate himself, trying to think only about himself, without focusing on anything else. He has to try to be constant, stay there attached to him, trying to seize the moment."
Do you think this World Championship is already mapped out?
"Marc is the favorite and there are tracks on the horizon that are congenial to him. Bagnaia is his first rival, but watch out for Alex Marquez, who showed great competitiveness in Thailand and in testing, finishing second. This confirms the big jump from the GP23 to the GP24. For the rest, we will then see what happens."
So can we say that Dall'Igna was right in preferring him to Martin?
"Gigi sees the data and knows the bike better than anyone. If he gave up Jorge, it was because he was sure of what Marc would do with the GP25. His qualities had already been seen with the GP23."
