UPDATE - At 6 p.m. local time, 8 a.m. Italian time, Yamaha announced that Johnny Rea will not race at Phillip Island. As a result of the morning crash, the pluri WSBK champion in fact suffered multiple contusions to his foot, and has been forced to raise the white flag. The Northern Irishman's World Championship campaign is therefore seriously compromised even before the start.
Johnny Rea's 2025 world championship has begun in the worst possible way. This morning, just before 1 p.m., the Northern Irishman crashed in Turn 2 and was then transported by ambulance to the medical center for assessment.
Initially there was talk of a left foot injury, but Johnny preferred to undergo an X-ray in Cowes. The result of the examination was a cold shower: multiple fractures. This is what our colleagues at Speedweek have reported, since no communication has yet come from Yamaha on the matter, despite the fact that four hours have passed since the incident.
The fact is that Johnny is in serious danger of not participating in the inaugural round at Phillip Island, and the absence would be no small problem for him ahead of the new season.
