After three intense test days at the Sepang shakedowns, in which he was at ease on the Trackhouse team's RS-GP25, the time has come for Ai Ogura to face the official MotoGP tests. The Moto2 world champion Japanese rider will, once again, get to share the track with the rivals he'll be facing on the track in his first MotoGP rookie season. He seems to be adapting well to the Aprilia despite the fact that he's still not very experienced in riding Noale's creature, a sign that bodes well for the future. In fact, Ogura will have to contend for the title of rookie of the year with two other newcomers, Thailand's Chantra, who joined the LCR Honda team, and Fermin Aldeguer riding the Gresini team's GP24.
"Physically, I've held up well these first three days of testing at the shakedowns," Ogura began. "Apart from some muscles that I wasn't able to train on the flat track, in general, I'm ready to face the upcoming tests."
How did you feel about the Aprilia at the shakedowns compared to your first approach in Barcelona?
"With my experience, I can't yet make comparisons between the RS-GP 2024 and the 2025. I'm learning in every aspect, but I especially improved a lot in braking compared to my debut. Compared to the Moto2, although the brakes are different, the braking style has remained similar, what changes are the references. If I brake normally, there's much more margin than in the Moto2."
Did you only work on the RS-GP 2025 or did you also get to try some new parts?
"I've been riding with the 2025 all the time. Right now, I'm working on adapting my sensations to the overall package."
Now that the shakedowns are over, you'll be facing the official tests. What's your next goal?
"In the shakedowns, I worked on a aprint simulation, a race simulation, and time attacks, but I still have to improve in every aspect. Also, handling all those buttons, and knowing how to use them with the right timing, isn't easy! I still lag behind in using the shape shifter compared to more experienced riders, and I still use the rear brake with my foot despite having the option to use the one on the handlebars."
Were you disappointed that Honda didn't organize something to celebrate your Moto2 title after so many years together?
"No, but I honestly didn't expect them to do something in that sense. It wasn't a problem for me."
