Cairoli: "Now in MotoGP the vehicle matters more than the rider. In motocross it's different."

"The motorbikes have become too technological. Ducati's dominance will last a long time if the other brands are not helped. The role of test rider? I discovered a new world."

MotoGP: Cairoli:

Monza Rally Show regular Antonio Cairoli, navigated for the occasion by Eleonora Mori, finished the first day of action in twelfth position at the wheel of a Skoda Fabia Rs Rally 2 fielded by Movisport. We caught up with him at the end of the first special stage and this is what he told us.

This is not your first time here, what do you like about this event?

"For people like me who do very few races a year, it is easier to approach. If we don't count the 2023 RallyLegend with the historic cars, it's been four to five years since I've had a rally car in my hands, so I'm happy with the way this Monza experience has started."

Is there a difference in the emotions you feel in the saddle versus when you're behind the wheel?

"Absolutely, since I don't have a lot of experience with four wheels. Even if there is an engine in the middle it's all completely different. Every time it is difficult to start again, however, gradually over the course of the event I am able to have a little more fun."

Looking at things from a wider perspective, after a lifetime with KTM you switched to Ducati, what was the change?

"I would say radical. I was able to have this great  opportunity thanks to the Borgo Panigale company that has entered motocross. We found an agreement and together we started to develop the bike. I am very happy."

From a pure motocross rider in 2024 you also became a test rider, a completely different story...

"Yes, and it's interesting because I'm discovering completely new things about the birth and design of a motorcycle."

In MotoGP Ducati has shown clear supremacy. Did you expect Martin's success or were you hoping for Bagnaia's reconfirmation?

"Jorge deserved the victory because even last year he went strong, but then he had some little problems, however, as an Italian I was rooting for Pecco. As for the manufacturer, it is certainly making a difference in the top class and we are proud of that."

Do you think the Desmosedici's superiority will last at least another couple of seasons?

"I think so without the introduction of some rule, I'm not saying to favor the other brands, but to allow them to do a little bit more so that the difference decreases. They are already doing that, however, it is also not enough because everything is becoming a bit too technological. Today the vehicle makes too much of a difference on the rider, something that doesn't exist in motocross and that we are not used to, although technology is moving forward here as well, and maybe that's okay."
