While waiting to get on the track, the F1's new drivers have already begun with their skirmishes. Why? Incredible but true. It's all in the numbers that were being assigned. For those who don't know, there are going to be three rookies in 2025: Oliver Bearman with Haas, Andrea Kimi Antonelli with Mercedes, and Jack Doohan with Alpine.
Both the Italian and Australian drivers wanted the #12 for their single-seaters. In the end, one of the two had to give in: namely, the son of five-time Moto GP World Champion. In a video posted on Instagram, the 21-year-old made it known that he opted for the #7 mainly for two reasons.
"I used the seven in 2019 (ed. when he was in the Euroformula Open) and even one of my idols - a person and a super special driver like Kimi Raikkonen - raced with that number," he said. "I can't wait to make it mine and maybe get some luck."
The much-coveted #12 also harks back to a champion of the category, as Antonelli explained: "It's the one Ayrton Senna raced with from 1985 until 1988. The year of his first world title. I've been using it since the F4. It's always gone well with the twelve, so there's no reasin to change it for next year."
