SBK, Rea and Yamaha less than a second behind Marini's MotoGP Honda at Jerez

THE TIMES AT 1 PM - The Northern Irishman is the fastest of all on the R1 in the morning, coming within three tenths of the time set by Bulega last October. 3rd Aleix Espargarò, 4th Locatelli followed by a surprising Gerloff on the Puccetti Kawasaki.

SBK: Rea and Yamaha less than a second behind Marini's MotoGP Honda at Jerez

Two days of Superbike testing began at 10 a.m. at Jerez, which will end tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. Lots of work for the teams present at the Andalusian track, among which the Honda MotoGP squadron stands out. Today Luca Marini and Aleix Espargarò will be testing while tomorrow it will be the turn of Joan Mir and Johann Zarco.

The fact is that at the stroke of 1 p.m. there is Luca Marini's RC-213V in front of everyone else, thanks to a time of 1'38"931. The Honda rider has set the pace ahead of Johnny Rea, less than a second off the top. For the Northern Irishman it is the first outing with his new crew chief, namely Oriol Pallares, who from 2025 will replace Andrew Pitt. Among the expected changes at Yamaha is an upgrade to the engine, but this will only be available from the upcoming January tests.

Going back to take a look at the chronometer, at the moment Rea is lapping three tenths slower than the 1'38"142 time recorded by Bulega with the Ducati in last October's tests. An encouraging sign then in view of the long winter ahead for the men in blue.

Behind the multi-SBK champion can be found Aleix Espargarò with the other Honda while fourth is Andrea Locatelli. Also standing out in the top five is Garrett Gerloff, on his second outing with Puccetti's Kawasaki Factory bike. A positive Tuesday for the American, to the point of being only four tenths away from the Yamaha number 65.

Behind him can be found Sam Lowes with the Ducati MarcVDS then Florian Marino with the Bimota. Worth noting that it is only the French test rider with the BK998 who will ride today while tomorrow it will be the turn of Bassani and Lowes. Then BMW will follow with Guintoli and Reiterberger.

At 6 pm the conclusion of this first day.
