At the end of the year, the sums are drawn, of successes and mistakes. For motorcycle racers, the crash ranking is one in which no one wants to excel. Where there's a will, however, there isn't necessarily a way, and someone has to get the prize for best (or worst) faller. In this 2024 season, it was Acosta who took it home. This was to be expected, because Pedro was the only rookie in the premier class, and inexperience tends to pay.
KTM's Spanish rider also contributed ...on his own, because 28 crashes in 20 Grands Prix is still a remarkable number. It was sufficient to beat a "specialist" like Marc Marquez. The champion on the Ducati regained that competitiveness he was looking for, but he has not lost the habit of giving in to gravity. Thus Marc ended the season with 24 tumbles. It seems to run in the family, because Alex finished on the podium of the tumblers with 21 falls (the same number also achieved in 2022 and 2023). For sure the Team Gresini mechanics have had their hands full this season. The only other rider to reach number 20 was Jack Miller, but that is also nothing new.
On the opposite side of the standings, there are two riders tied level: Luca Marini and Aleix Espargarò. Both collected just four crashes. Among the riders at the top of the standings, the one who went down the least was Bagnaia: just 9 times. Martin, on the other hand, succumbed to gravity 15 times, Bastianini 13. So didn't Pecco lose the World Championship because of mistakes? Yes, because most of those crashes (8) happened in the race, while Jorge fell mostly in practice and qualifying.
Also in Moto2, the best faller was a debutante: Ayumu Sasaki. The Japanese rider collected 15 falls, 13, on the other hand, were those of Darryn Binder and Jake Dixon, who thus deserved the podium. World champion Ai Ogura, on the other hand, fell the least: just 2 times all season. The same number as Bo Benssneyder, who, however, did not do the last 7 races.
We come to Moto3, where there is a tie for first place: in fact, David Almansa and Filippo Farioli collected 18 crashes. Fourteen, on the other hand, those of rookie Angel Piqueras. World champion David Alonso also went down frequently, a good 12 times. He never did so in the races, however, and in fact the Colombian rider scored points in every race. He achieved 14 wins, 15 podiums and his worst result was 11th place in Jerez.
On the other hand, the most careful was Ryusey Yamanaka, on the ground just 4 times all year, One more mistake than Stefano Nepa and Joel Esteban.
In total, there was less tumbling than usual this year. The total tumbling count for the 3 classes reached 865, while the previous two years had exceeded 1,000. Only in 2020, a season marked by Covid, had there been fewer falls.
As for the circuits, the most treacherous was Jerez, with 74 crashes over the three days. Mugello, on the other hand, counted just 29.
