Moto3, David Alonso among legends: Marc Marquez's record in his sights

By winning another victory in Barcelona, the Colombian rider will get the chance to make history even more by becoming the most successful rider ever in a single World Championship season

Moto3: David Alonso among legends: Marc Marquez's record in his sights

David Alonso, undisputed rider of the Moto3, is experiencing a record-breaking season. Despite having clinched the title at Motegi, with a full four races in advance, the Colombian rider from the Aspar team shows no signs of  at stopping his incredible winning streak and continues to reap victories in this overwhelming season finale. He's became the most successful rider ever in the lightest class of the MotoGP, with his 13th win of the season in Sepang.

This was the 6th consecutive victory for the 18-year-old who, in Malaysia, became the first rider to repeat Valentino Rossi's feat in the 125cc in 1997. Alonso could end up beating that record next weekend in Barcelona, when he'll not only get the chance to rewrite the nine-time World Champion's record but also beat another motorcycling legend, like his idol Marc Marquez.

By standing on the top step of the podium for the 13th time this year, David has equaled the number of triumphs reached by the Spanish champion in 2014. A year in which the eldest of the Marquez brothers became MotoGP champion, breaking all winning records in a single MotoGP season. These are impressive numbers for a young talent such as Alonso who, despite having only made his full-time debut on the stage in the World Championship in 2023, is already in 6th place in the rankings of the current most successful riders.

In fact, as our colleagues at As recalled, the Colombian has joined Miguel Oliveira, Brad Binder, and Johann Zarco at 17 wins and could equal the 18 achieved by Alex Rins and Jorge Martin as early as the next round in Barcelonan. Considering his young age and incredible roster, Alonso could also surpass Maverick Vinales' 26 career wins and put Francesco Bagnaia's 37 in his sights. Instead, it's more difficult to think that he could become the most successful by joining Marc Marquez at 88, but he certainly has the stuff to pull it off, as the champion from Cervera pointed out when interviewed by DAZN.

"I identify a lot with him," he admitted. "I love what I see in him. He's a sponge, he asks questions, he never tires of learning, and I like that a lot. This year, he won the Moto3 World Championship. Next year, he'll do his apprenticeship in the Moto2, he'll make his mistakes ... but he has everything to keep growing. He has charisma, something special, and, above all, manners, which is one of the most important aspects."
