MotoGP, Malaysian Grand Prix: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Slaps on the track and hugs off it between Bagnaia and Martin. Marquez hands the podium to Bastianini. Alonso finds more ink in his pen to write again in the record books

MotoGP: Malaysian Grand Prix: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

On the postcard sent from Malaysia, Bagnaia and Martin wrote 'overtakes and hugs'. Marc Marquez gave the spot to Bastianini. Miller proved to be harder than steel. Vietti won, so did Alonso, but that is no surprise.

THE GOOD - Only one between Bagnaia and Martin will win the title, but both have already made the sport win. Slaps on the track and hugs off it. They are not interested in entertaining with words, they prefer action. They are a new generation of champions and let's stop comparing them with the past. Pecco and Jorge are frenemies, like in a Disney movie. With fewer animals and more overtaking.

THE BAD - Jorge Viegas proposing to go racing anyway in Valencia, among the displaced and the rubble, to help the local population. President, we don't question your good faith, but your common sense.

THE UGLY - Ten wins in a season, like the greats, but it might not be enough. A sort of Saturday afternoon fever among bad jokes in Bagnaia. He would sign a petition to abolish the Sprints, and it's not hard to see why.

DISAPPOINTMENT - On Sunday afternoon he had the face of someone who had received a polka-dot tie as a Christmas present. The gift (given by Marc Marquez) was the 3rd step of the podium, but Enea Bastianini did not particularly appreciate it. His adventure in Ducati is coming to an end, and there remains the regret of not having achieved everything that could have been achieved.

CONFIRMATION - There are only two certainties in MotoGP: the first is that a Ducati will win, the second that Quartararo won't give a damn. Fabio doesn't care what the final position is, he gives everything and more. The good news is that Yamaha is getting behind him, and Rins' improvement is the confirmation.

MISTAKE - Bagnaia and Martin had a different pace, Marc Marquez realized this but did not accept it. He made a mistake when the only thing to do was to stay there and wait for the finish line.

SURPRISE - Injuries and victories, Celestino Vietti's 2024 recap. When he is not in the infirmary, he is on the top step of the podium. For the future, he needs to avoid the former and renew his subscription to the latter. Easy, right?

OVERTAKE - Just one? Melius abundare quam deficere (it's better to abound than to fail) claimed the Latins. Forget chariots, take two Ducatis and give one each to Bagnaia and Martin. You can see the result below.

CURIOSITY - Record-breaker David Alonso. Thirteen wins this season, six in a row in the cadet class, as only Valentino Rossi had done. He still has one race left to improve.

I TOLD YOU SO - Bastianini on the eve of the GP: "winning is never easy, but it can be done." In hindsight, no.
