Enea Bastianini consoled himself with a third place in Saturday's Sepang Sprint. Complicated by health conditions not at the top due to a cold and a lack of confidence riding the Rossa, the Ducati man could do nothing but reel himself in.
In the end, the glass is half full even if Enea cannot consider himself more than a little happy, since last year it was he who won in Malaysia.
"I can't be happy, because every time I have the same problem and I can never solve it," he said, "usually in the final part of the races I am fast, but not now. We don't know what's going on and what area to work in. For sure we will have to do something important this afternoon ahead of Sunday. Obviously I was hoping to do better in the Sprint, but as said I didn't feel right. Unfortunately, I have different feelings about the bike and I am less confident in thinking about victory."
Enea, what is the limit?
"In these last races I'm lacking confidence on the front, the bike moves too much and on a track with such high temperatures it is really too much. It will need a different move, but I have no ideas yet."
What can you say about Bagnaia's crash?
"For a moment I thought: man, Pecco crashed. Turn 9 was really critical today, because you push the entry and if you go long you can't save it, in fact as soon as you release the brake it takes nothing to lose the front. More than "turn 9" I would call it "the bastard." I was lucky not to end up on the ground as well."
Do the high temperatures accentuate this?
"When you are behind you suffer more because of the high temperatures and that is a problem. Usually, however, I don't have these kinds of problems, but here they emerged."
Did you expect Marquez up front there?
"I expected him to be strong, because at the end of the day we are talking about Marc and he is not the last rider in MotoGP. He is a strong rider and it is always tough to fight with him."
Going back to Bagnaia, this crash threatens to make him pay for it in the world championship race.
"It is true that he pays a price for it, since Jorge has a chance to win the title, but anything can happen in racing. It only takes a little, because we are always on the limit, there will be 20 laps on Sunday and I will want to try to win. For sure Jorge is lucid while riding and he has taken another step toward the title."
From the outside how do you see the title race?
"I always try to push hard without thinking too much about the standings. Jorge and Pecco are fighting for the title and it's normal that no one wants to make a mistake against them. In the end, however, we are here to do the races and give our best."
As for the challenge for third place, are you going all-out for it on Sunday?
"I have to be a little bit all in but without overdoing it. I will try to do what I can do based on how I feel. If not, there's no point overdoing it."
