Yesterday Viñales looked like he could at least save face for Aprilia in Thailand. He earned direct entry into the Q2, but it wasn't enough. In qualifying, he only reached a 10th time, thanks to the Morbidelli's and Zarco's falls, and just added more to the disaster during the Sprint. Maverick finished second to last (only ahead of Savadori) and was almost 30 seconds behind, in 13 laps, from winner Bastianini.
"It's been hard since yesterday. I don't have good sensations on the bike," he said, spreading his arms wide. "We have very little grip, and I'm worried about tomorrow. If I have to race with the hard rear tire, it's going to be difficult to even be able to stay on the bike. I knew it was going to be a complicated weekend, but I'll try to do my best."
Nothing seems to be going right. "Where do I lack grip? Everywhere. I can't do anything," he continued his explanation. "The bike doesn't work on this track. Even with the medium rear tire, I was afraid to bend."
His brandmates didn't do much better either (Fernandez finished 14th ahead of Espargarò), and they need to find the cause of the problems.
"We're trying to understand. It's hard for the team as well," Maverick said. "Last year, the situation was different but, these days, there's nothing we can do. We've made the bike longer, shortened it, tried another swingarm, but not much has changed. The Aprilia is simply not working here."
At least there's one positive point: the RS-GP "cooks"' riders less. "We were lucky today because it was cloudy, but the situation was better than I expected," Viñales concluded.
