Ahead of everyone in Free Practice 1 and ninth in the afternoon session Marco Bezzecchi archived the first day at the Buriram circuit quite satisfied, albeit not 100% thinking about how often in the most recent rounds the good premises of Friday have almost never been maintained in the following days.
"The goal was to get into Q2 and I did it. Honestly after this morning I thought I was going to do better in the afternoon, but every time I mount the softer option in the rear I always struggle to get the bike to corner, especially on entry with the brakes and in the first part of acceleration, also, here as in Mandalika they brought us a hard compound perfect for braking, but because of the understeer not ideal. With the soft-hard combination, I had a good pace, but then in pre-qualifying I struggled." he analyzed.
"Can the soft be used for the race? In Indonesia I used it like Morbidelli, however, it is limiting when overtaking as someone with the hard can brake harder. If you have someone in front of you and you can't overtake them you can turn better all you want, but you don't need it," was his reflection.
Widening the picture to his season so far the Rimini native considered, "Lately I have been growing, however in terms of results we have achieved less than expected. In Misano and Indonesia we did well, but while in Romagna I did the best, in Mandalika it could have been better, instead unfortunately I made a mistake and missed the chance to fight for the podium in the Sprint. The same thing happened in the GP, when I passed Franco I was caught up for the reasons I explained earlier and couldn't get into the top 3. In Australia, on the other hand, I struggled except for speed. I simply have to try to concretize more. Physically, how am I doing? I was hoping better, my shoulder is burning so much. Luckily it's a track with a lot of right turns, however I've endured worse and I'm not worried."
Also the other side of the VR46 Racing box was suffering this first taste of the Thai weekend. Thirteenth in the first round and then 16th Fabio Di Giannantonio explained everything that did not work.
"I didn't expect it, but I'm struggling a lot because here there are a lot of right turns and a lot of braking, consequently you need to put your body on the inside to turn the bike. I had become accustomed to continuous improvement and instead here I took steps backward in terms of pain, so we are trying to fine-tune the bike as much as possible to buffer my physical shortcomings."
"Does the distance worry me? No, the problem is that I'm not effective. Let's say my riding position at the moment is not really MotoGP style. It's too bad because in left-hand turns I'm very strong, the potential is really high. Obviously in the last races I had been able to manage myself because there was a mix of corners and instead on this circuit I am suffering. On the straight I'm fine, but in the changes of direction I'm very high with my left arm and I can't keep the center of gravity low enough to turn the bike," he revealed.
"What can I do in the coming days? I want to give my best even though I know I will have to have surgery. It is important to collect data because next season will start from here. The commitment is 300 percent. Could some ergonomic adjustments be needed? No, because you change weight and more. You risk altering the set-up and getting worse, so we have ruled it out," he finally clarified.
