Fabio Quartararo started from the 18th row of the grid in the Phillip Island GP and, passing under the checkered flag in 9th, can be considered a good result, considering the Yamaha's difficulties. But the French rider thinks that more could've been achieved without a problem that conditioned him.
"In the second part, I managed to keep a good pace but, in the first, I risked a highside five or six times," he explained. "The rear tire wasn't ready, and I was always at risk of losing it quite aggressively. We have to improve in this aspect because, here, and also in Mandalika, we struggled to get the tires up to temperature. We have to figure out why. But I'm happy with my last ten laps."
What about the front runners?
"I had a good start. I gained five or six positions, but I couldn't keep up with the group ahead of me. Not being able to warm up the tire was my biggest problem."
Did it surprise you?
"Actually, I didn't expect to be so fast at the end. On Friday, in my time attack, I had done a 1'28"4. Today, on lap twenty-six, I was faster. I think we have something to learn from this race."
Rins also lapped with interesting times.
"It's definitely important to have more data, Two bikes aren't enough but, next year, we'll have more, and we can improve faster."
You came in 18 seconds behind the first, but the race was 53 seconds faster than in 2023. What does that mean?
"It doesn't mean anything because the asphalt has changed. I don't think we have to look at the gap from the first, never from the top five or six, and I was faster at the end of the race. The first goal must be to be in the top seven every time, like we did in Misano."
