The decision made by Ducati 's top management to bet on Marc Marquez in 2025 instead of a younger rider like Martin - who's been entertaining for the past two years and now commands the overall MotoGP standings - continues to be a cause of discussion.
When speaking to GP Racing, the Spanish rider's current team manager at Prima Pramac Racing, Gino Borsoi, convincingly said: "In my opinion, Jorge deserved his place in the factory team next year."
The question on everyone's mind is: what happened after Mugello to change everything and lead the Borgo Panigale factory to opt for the rider from Cervera instead of the more manageable 26-year-old? The first is a media heavyweight, as well as a possible source of disturbance for Bagnaia, while the latter seemed to have an advantage in inheriting Bastianini's bike, up to that point.
"Gigi dall'Igna should be asked that question. But it's clear that he's fascinated by him and his way of riding. That an eight-time champion does everything he can to ride must be rewarding for an engineer like him," he stated, but reiterating his own surprise at the change of plans when everything seemed to have been settled.
For the Italian executive, it would be wrong to dwell too much on what could have been and was not. "It's history by now, and there's nothing we can do about it. It's not good for the rider to cry about it either. We just have to try to enjoy the time we have left together and prove our worth, otherwise, we lose sight of the challenge we're facing. We have to win the title and only think about that."
And it's precisely in this respect that the Martinator seems to be much more complete now than he was in 2023 and able to better handle the close confrontation with Pecco, the defending champion. "He's made strides, mentally, and is able to be much more focused. The team has grown and knows how to be more responsive in offering solutions for problems, as well as in strategy and preparation when it comes to various cenarios. That said, it's important that Jorge knows that we're all with him and ready to help him out."
