With the entry of Liberty Media, America's presence within the F1 calendar has grown at the speed of light, as in the space of a handful of seasons it has gone from having one to as many as three events with Texas flanked by Florida and Nevada. It is therefore quite likely that, following the entry of the US promoter into MotoGP, something similar will be going on in two wheels as well.
And this is much more than a feeling as there is already a plan on the table although not in the short term. While in fact it seems to be a foregone conclusion that in 2025 we will start in Thailand on the first weekend of March, the same can be said of COTA as the only stopover in the States of the series. Dorna, the company that promotes MotoGP, has been trying to add a second round in the United States to the calendar for a few months, but has no plans to do so as early as the 2025 season.
As mentioned, however, the idea is to expand the number of races, and this was confirmed by Dorna's commercial director Dan Rossomondo to Motorsport.com."There is an itnerest to host the sport, but we have pretty strict safety standards and we cannot just race everywhere. In the US, we also have to look to make an impact in the right market. Austin is in the center of the country, it's a popular city and checks a lot of boxes for us," he remarked.
On the other hand, the return of Laguna Seca, which needs to be structurally revamped in order to obtain homologation, but above all is at the center of a dispute in which local citizens are against any competition for reasons of noise and pollution, seems unlikely. On paper there would be a project under development in Tennessee at Flatrock Motorsports Park, but question marks remain, while it is certain that there will not be an Indianapolis GP, just as it is almost impossible to create a chance to race in Miami.
"The US is an important focus because it dictates a lot of economic decisions for commercial partners. All my partners ask: 'when will we have another race in the US?' but we also need to work out the balance of the calendar," he said, later revealing that the venue for the presentation of the new season will be Bangkok."It is a huge two-wheel market, and we love the idea of a pre-event presentation there," he concluded.
